The Story of Heavy Metal

Heavy Metal is composed of several segments that are based on original stories or adapted from the magazine. The segments are connected by a framing story that involves a glowing green orb called the Loc-Nar, which claims to be "the sum of all evils". The Loc-Nar travels across time and space, influencing various civilizations and individuals with its corrupting power. The movie follows its journey from prehistoric times to the far future, as it encounters different characters and scenarios.

Soft Landing

The movie begins with a stunning sequence that shows a space shuttle orbiting the Earth. The bay doors open, releasing a 1960 Corvette. An astronaut seated in the car then begins descending through Earth's atmosphere, landing in a desert canyon. He drives to his home, where he is greeted by his daughter. He says he has something to show her.

The astronaut reveals that he has brought back a mysterious green sphere from his mission. He explains that it is very old and very powerful, but before he can say more, the sphere melts through its container and kills him. It then floats towards his daughter, who is terrified. The sphere introduces itself as the Loc-Nar, and tells her that she must listen to its stories or die.

Harry Canyon

The first story takes place in New York City in 2031. Harry Canyon is a cynical taxi driver who witnesses a shootout between gangsters and police at an art museum. He picks up a young woman named Stella, who turns out to be involved in the conflict. She tells him that she has stolen the Loc-Nar from her father's killer, a crime boss named Rudnick. Rudnick's men chase them across the city, but Harry manages to escape using his car's laser cannon. He takes Stella to his apartment, where they have sex. The next morning, Stella betrays Harry and tries to kill him for the Loc-Nar. Harry uses his car's self-destruct button to kill her instead.

The second story follows Den, a nerdy teenager who finds a green meteorite in his backyard. He touches it and is transported to another world called Neverwhere. There, he transforms into a muscular man with super strength and no clothes. He rescues a beautiful woman named Katherine from being sacrificed by a cult led by Ard, an evil sorcerer who worships the Loc-Nar. Den learns that Katherine is also from Earth, and that she was sent to Neverwhere by an archaeologist named Norl. Norl wants to use the Loc-Nar to overthrow Ard and become ruler of Neverwhere. Den agrees to help Norl, but only because he wants to stay with Katherine. Along the way, he fights giant creatures, flying ships, and Ard's minions.

Captain Sternn

The third story is set on a space station where Captain Lincoln F. Sternn is on trial for various crimes, including murder, rape, extortion, bribery, drug trafficking, tax evasion, and impersonating a nun. He bribes a witness named Hanover Fiste to testify in his favor. However, Fiste is exposed to the Loc-Nar by an agent working for Sternn's enemies. The Loc-Nar causes Fiste to grow into a monstrous creature that rampages through the courtroom. Sternn escapes with his lawyer Charlie in a spaceship.

The fourth story depicts a World War II bomber plane that is returning from a mission over Germany. The crew discovers that one of their comrades has been killed by enemy fire. They also notice that their plane is being followed by another bomber that has no markings or signs of life. They try to contact it but get no response. They soon realize that it is actually controlled by zombies who have been infected by the Loc-Nar. The zombies invade their plane and kill most of them except for one survivor who parachutes out.

So Beautiful and So Dangerous

The fifth story involves Dr Anrak ,a scientist who is investigating an outbreak of mutations caused by an unknown source of radiation . He suspects that it has something to do with an alien spaceship that has been hovering over Earth for two years . He interviews Gloria ,a secretary who has been exposed to the radiation . She reveals that she has developed an attraction for robots . As they talk ,the spaceship abducts them both . Inside ,they meet two stoned aliens named Zeke and Edsel ,who are responsible for spreading the radiation . They also encounter Robot ,a humanoid robot who falls in love with Gloria . They decide to join them on their intergalactic trip ,leaving behind their old lives .

The final story is set in a post-apocalyptic world where an evil race called the Taarakians have been wiped out by the Loc-Nar . The only survivor is Taarna ,a warrior woman who receives a telepathic call for help from her elders . She flies on her winged mount to their temple ,where they tell her that she must stop the Loc-Nar from destroying their world . She agrees ,but they warn her that it will cost her life . She tracks down the Loc-Nar ,which has taken over a barbarian army led by an evil warlord . She fights her way through his fortress ,killing many enemies along the way . She confronts him in his throne room ,where he tries to seduce her with his power . She refuses ,and they engage in a fierce duel . She manages to wound him ,but he stabs her in the chest . She then uses her last strength to activate her amulet ,which causes both her and him to explode . The explosion destroys the Loc-Nar ,ending its reign of terror .

The Music of Heavy Metal
